Industrial Water Treatment Solutions
INDUSTRIAL WATER TREATMENT
For industrial facilities where water quality directly affects process reliability and equipment longevity, filtration is never an afterthought. Whether you are running a refinery, a power generation plant, or a municipal treatment system, the condition of your process water has a measurable impact on operations. A professional media filter service addresses that reality head-on, keeping filtration equipment performing at its best, protecting downstream systems, and helping facilities meet water quality targets without unnecessary disruption.
Media filtration is a physical separation process where water passes through layered granular media, typically anthracite, sand, and garnet, to remove suspended solids, sediment, and turbidity.
Unlike single-medium sand filters, multi-media filtration (MMF) uses stratified beds of varying densities to create an optimized filtration gradient. This enables higher flow rates while capturing particles as small as 10 microns, making it adaptable to diverse water quality conditions.
MMF works as a standalone unit or as pretreatment for reverse osmosis, deionization, carbon filtration, and membrane systems. It also serves as post-clarification polishing to remove residual fine “pin floc” from primary clarifiers.
Multi-media filtration is a critical stage in water treatment across a wide range of industrial environments. When filters underperform, the effects ripple downstream: RO membranes foul faster, ion exchange resin loads increase, and equipment that depends on consistent inlet water quality begins to drift out of specification.
Power plants require high-quality boiler feed water to protect turbines, heat exchangers, and high-pressure steam systems from scaling and solids-related damage. Multi-media filters serve as the frontline defense before water enters softeners, deaerators, or RO systems, and when they degrade, the entire downstream treatment train bears the load.
Suspended solids that pass through an underperforming filter accumulate in heat exchangers, membranes, and process equipment, reducing efficiency and triggering costly unplanned maintenance. Petrochemical facilities depend on consistent, solids-free process water, and that consistency starts with a well-maintained filtration stage.
Pulp and paper mills manage some of the highest water volumes in industrial processing, with filtration systems that must perform reliably across fluctuating flow rates and variable solids loading. When filters underperform, the effects ripple across the facility’s entire water balance.
Pharmaceutical water systems require strict purity control at every stage of production, where lapses in filtration performance can carry regulatory and product quality consequences.
For membrane-grade feed water, microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) systems outperform standard multi-media filtration. These compact, skid-mounted solutions handle fluctuating conditions while delivering consistent output. Paired with MMF pretreatment, they tackle diverse water challenges. A complete strategy also monitors membrane integrity, applies cleaning protocols, and benchmarks performance against design specifications.

Without proper maintenance, even a well-designed multi-media filtration system will experience issues. Sepratech provides comprehensive multi-media filter maintenance, including:
Media Inspection and Testing
To evaluate remaining useful life, identify channeling, and detect bed irregularities that can create bypass flow or uneven loading across the filter cross-section, giving you a clear picture of where your system stands before problems surface downstream.
Media Change-Outs
Using properly sized and graded anthracite, sand, and garnet selected to match your original design specifications, restoring the layered density gradient that makes multi-media filtration effective across a range of particle sizes and flow rates.
Backwash Optimization
To fine-tune cycle timing, flow rates, and duration so the cleaning sequence fully re-stratifies the bed, removes accumulated solids, and prevents fines from migrating into your downstream process.
Vessel Inspections
Covering the condition of internal distribution systems, nozzle integrity, underdrain assemblies, and any visible signs of corrosion or mechanical wear that could affect flow uniformity or lead to unplanned failures.
Not every scenario permits a capital project timeline. Equipment breakdowns, scheduled shutdowns, and transient production spikes occasionally require immediate access to filtration capacity not currently on-site. Rental filtration solutions, such as portable multi-media filter skids, offer facilities a way to bridge these gaps without sacrificing water standards or halting operations.
Leased units prove especially valuable during the commissioning phase of new permanent infrastructure, during extensive maintenance, or while a plant pilots a novel treatment strategy before finalizing a full-scale purchase. These systems are designed for rapid deployment and can be integrated into existing piping and control frameworks with very little field engineering required.
No two industrial water treatment challenges are identical. Flow rates, source water chemistry, contaminant profiles, available footprint, and downstream process requirements all influence which filtration system will perform best. The right solution for a high-volume cooling water makeup application looks very different from what works in a pharmaceutical process water system.
The evaluation process should account for current system performance, downstream equipment condition, and any known water quality gaps. Our team will review these factors and recommend filtration equipment, media selection, and automation level (whether manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic) that matches both the operational environment and the technical capabilities of the people running the system.
A well-executed media filter service program is ultimately about more than just keeping a filter running. It is about making sure the filtration stage is consistently delivering the water quality that the rest of the treatment system and the broader industrial process depend on. When filtration performs well, everything downstream tends to follow.

Following our audit identifying critical media loss in Filter A at Koch Methanol’s St. James, LA facility, Sepratech returned to perform a complete media changeout. Our team removed all spent media using vacuum equipment, extracted and cleaned the wedge wire bottom laterals off-site, and conducted a full internal vessel inspection. We reloaded the filter with an enhanced eight-layer media recipe, incorporating a new 50-mesh garnet layer to achieve tighter particle removal than the original design allowed. Sepratech oversaw the initial backwash process, ensuring the filter was returned to full operational specification before handing back to Koch personnel.
