Industrial Water Treatment Solutions
INDSUTRIAL WATER TREATMENT
Your pressure vessel may appear to be in good working order on the outside, but the conditions that determine its safe service life occur on the inside, out of sight, typically unmonitored, and frequently misunderstood until something fails. Corrosion under deposits, fractured welds, corroded internals, and damaged linings rarely provide obvious outward warning signs. By the time an issue becomes obvious from outside the shell, the damage has typically been mounting for years. Pressure vessels operate in conditions that quietly accelerate metal loss, fatigue, and liner disintegration, yet most operators rely on calendar-based assumptions rather than observed data. Sepratech provides internal vessel inspection services to industrial facilities in North America, providing a clear, documented image of the vessel’s status before minor degradation leads to a forced shutdown or a regulatory issue. We replace speculation with measured facts that your engineering and reliability teams can use.
The only way to be sure what is happening inside of a pressure vessel is through an internal inspection. External thickness measurements, ultrasonic surveys and operating data are all useful, but they cannot fully characterize the internal corrosion patterns, the lining condition, the weld integrity or the state of internal hardware, such as trays and baffles. These components all affect vessel safety and performance, and they each have their own degradation timeline.
The majority of facilities discover major internal problems only during an emergency shutdown or when a process upset exposes damage that could have been detected earlier. Options are expensive and limited by then. An internal pressure vessel inspection that is disciplined can detect degradation when it’s still possible to correct it by targeted repair, lining replacement, or scheduled component replacement. This prevents the vessel from needing a complete rebuild or replacement.
Economically, proactive inspection is the best option. Unplanned vessel failures can lead to production losses, repair costs and regulatory scrutiny. In the worst cases, they may even cause safety incidents. Internal inspections that are documented support fitness-for-service assessments and satisfy code and jurisdictional requirements, such as API 510. They also give insurers and regulatory agencies the proof they need to know the asset is managed responsibly
Our internal vessel inspections are systematic and repeatable. We don’t just stroll about the vessel and report our findings; we measure, photograph, and document specific conditions in accordance with code standards and original design intent.
We visually evaluate the whole internal surface of the shell and heads for general corrosion, localized pitting, erosion patterns, blistering, cracking, and mechanical wear. Welds deserve special attention because heat-affected zones and weld seams are common sites for stress-corrosion cracking, fatigue cracking, and selective attack.
We take ultrasonic thickness measurements at established CMLs (condition-monitoring locations) as well as at other locations where visual inspection indicates metal loss. Readings are compared to the original design thickness and earlier inspection data to determine corrosion rates and project remaining life.
Many vessels use internal coatings, refractory, or cladding to protect the base metal from harsh process conditions. We check lining surfaces for disbonding, holidays, blistering, cracking, erosion, and general wear. Where holiday testing or adhesion testing is required, we organize it as part of the inspection scope. If a liner fails and is not repaired, the underlying steel corrodes dramatically.
Trays, baffles, distributors, demisters, vortex breakers, support rings, and internal piping all affect vessel performance and their respective failure modes. We record the status of each component, searching for fouling, mechanical damage, corrosion, fastener loss, and indicators of vibration or flow-induced wear. Hardware discoveries frequently explain process performance issues that vessel-level data cannot.
These checks turn an internal inspection from a visual walkthrough into a measurable engineering assessment your reliability team can actually act on. Findings are mapped, photographed, and documented in a way that supports immediate repair decisions and feeds directly into long-term inspection planning.
A proper internal vessel inspection gives you more than a pass/fail verdict, it gives you measured corrosion rates, photographed evidence, code-compliant records, and a clear path forward.

We plan internal inspections in accordance with planned turnarounds or outage windows to minimize disruptions to adjacent operations.
Step 1
We review vessel drawings, U-1 form, prior inspection reports and repair history. We also collect any process upsets which may have affected the internal condition. This context informs our inspectors where and what to check before they enter the vessel.
Step 2
Our team will coordinate with you on the requirements for isolation, lockouts, confined spaces, atmospheric monitoring and rescue. We arrive with all the necessary tools, PPE, lighting and measurement equipment to conduct a thorough inspection.
Step 3
Inspectors perform visual examinations, thickness measurements, component assessment and component review. They also take photographs and record findings in real time. Anomalies can be mapped to vessel drawings for future inspections.
Step 4
After demobilizing, we provide a report that includes measured data, photographic proof, anomalies identified, and prioritized suggestions. The findings are classified by severity so that your reliability team can schedule immediate repairs, monitor borderline situations, and schedule long-term work accordingly.
A thorough pressure vessel internal inspection reveals recurring issues throughout refinery, petrochemical, methanol, power generating, and water treatment facilities. Lining disbondment has occurred discreetly between inspection periods. Localized pitting beneath fouling deposits at low locations where water accumulates. Cracked or corroded distributor laterals cause unexplained process performance difficulties. Vibration causes tray fasteners to loosen. Corrosion concentrated at the vapor-liquid interface, where most external sensors would not have detected it. When detected early, each of these findings can be corrected; when not, they constitute significant events.
An inspection report is only valuable if it influences decisions. After each engagement, we collaborate with your reliability and engineering teams to translate results into actionable next steps, such as repair scopes, monitoring locations, improved inspection intervals, and fitness-for-service inputs. The idea is to create a documented vessel management plan that your team can confidently execute, rather than a binder that sits on a shelf until the next outage necessitates another reactionary scramble.
The vessel geometry determines the type of internal inspection that must be performed. Once entry has been established, vertical vessels allow for easy access and uniform inspection. Horizontal vessels can be more challenging because manway access may be restricted, internal movement limited, and degradation patterns along the shell’s length vary in ways not always apparent from one entry point. Sepratech’s extensive experience in inspecting both vessel configurations in heavy industrial environments allows us to extract complete and defensible information from vessels that resist conventional inspection methods.

When an industrial facility’s horizontal pressure media filters began underperforming, Sepratech conducted a comprehensive site audit to identify the root cause. Our team uncovered systemic media loss driven by improper backwash sequencing, along with widespread mechanical deficiencies across all units. Separatech delivered a detailed remediation plan and executed a full media re-bedding on the most critically impacted filter, introducing an enhanced media recipe to improve filtration performance. With one filter successfully restored to design specification, work on the remaining units is ongoing.
