Media Filter Inspection

Media Filter Inspection

Your filter vessel may appear to be functioning well, but looks can conceal major problems within the pressure shell. While your filter is still producing water, fouled media, broken laterals, damaged nozzles, corroded internals, and shifting bed levels occur silently. Sepratech offers a comprehensive media filter inspection service to industrial facilities across North America, covering both vertical and horizontal pressure filters and providing you with a clear, documented picture of what is happening inside the vessel before minor issues turn into costly failures.

Why a Media Filter Inspection Matters

The majority of facilities will only open a new filter after the performance has dropped, the differential pressure has increased, or downstream equipment is damaged due to media carryover. The root cause is usually months old by the time symptoms start to appear. Internal corrosion, lateral damages, gravel migration and compacted media or fouled media are all silently compounding and reducing filtration efficiency. They also increase backwash demands, chemical usage and stress downstream on softeners and RO membranes.

This uncertainty is eliminated by a properly performed media filter inspection service. You don’t have to guess at the condition of your filter based solely on external gauges and backwash behavior. Instead, you get a documented assessment that includes media depth, media integrity, internal hardware integrity, as well as overall vessel health. In horizontal pressure filter plants, where internal geometry and access are difficult to assess, a disciplined examination is the only way to determine what the filter needs. This could be a targeted repair, media top-up, or a complete re-bed.

What We Do During an Inspection

Our industrial media filter inspection services are systematic, repeatable, and do not involve a cursory check through the manway. Every inspection has the same goal: leave the site with enough information to make confident judgments regarding the filter’s future.

External and Operational Review

Before opening the vessel, our team members inspect flow rates, differential pressure trends, backwash cycles, turbidity data, and any recent performance issues. This operational context allows us to evaluate what we see within the vessel and link field data to actual plant behavior.

Media Depth and Condition Assessment

The internal distribution laterals are unbolted and detached from the vessel. We transfer them to our workshop for pressure washing and deep cleaning, then inspect each one for damage and properly reinstall them before the fresh media load starts.

Internal Hardware Inspection

We evaluate the vessel’s walls, nozzle floor or lateral assembly, air scour distributors, inlet and outlet pipework, and any visible internal fittings. We inspect for corrosion, pitting, cracking, loose hardware, damaged laterals, and any other condition that could result in media bypass, channeling, or future mechanical failure.

Identifying Root Causes, Not Just Symptoms

Our technicians trace problems back to their source, whether that is fouled media, a cracked lateral, uneven flow distribution, or an upstream water quality shift the filter was never designed to handle.

Every examination concludes with a written report detailing measured media depths, sample observations, images of internal conditions, and specific recommendations. You will obtain a defensible record of filter condition as well as a prioritized path forward.

A Full Look at Your Filter

An inspection rarely ends at the media bed. While we are on site with the vessel open, our team keeps an eye on everything around it for signs of wear, corrosion, or drift from spec. If something looks off, we will flag it, explain what it means for your filter's performance, and give you a clear path forward before it turns into the next problem.

How It Works

No complicated onboarding. Inspections will be scheduled to coincide with your turnaround window to minimize any disruption to adjacent operations.

Step 1

Pre-Inspection: We collect vessel drawings, original media specs, flow data and recent operational history. Our technicians can arrive at the site with a better understanding of what the filter should be doing and where it might be failing.

Step 2

Site Mobilization and Safe Isolation: Our team will coordinate with you on lockout, confined space, and isolation requirements. We arrive equipped with all the tools, PPE, and sampling equipment needed to safely open the vessel and begin the inspection.

Step 3

Internal Inspection and Sampling: We measure the media depths in the vessel, collect samples of the layers, inspect the internals and laterals, and take photos to document any areas that are problematic. The findings are recorded in real-time so that nothing is overlooked once the vessel has been closed.

Step 4

Report and Recommendations – After demobilizing, we provide a written report that includes measured data, photographs, and the engineer’s recommendations. Our team can provide a quote for any necessary corrective work, including media top-ups or a complete re-bedding.

Horizontal Filter Inspections

Horizontal pressure filters present unique issues that do not exist in typical vertical vessels. The side-mounted cylindrical form limits manway access, complicates internal movement, and alters how media settles throughout the length of the bed. Evaluating depth uniformity, lateral condition, and gravel movement in a horizontal filter requires more than a flashlight and a cursory inspection.

Sepratech has extensive field expertise assessing horizontal media filters in difficult industrial environments such as petrochemical, refinery, methanol, and power generation facilities. Our experts understand how horizontal beds behave, where problems typically occur, and how to document results in a way that allows for clear repair plans.

Scheduled Turnaround or Troubleshooting — We Handle Both

Some facilities inspect filters on a scheduled interval as part of preventive maintenance. Others call us when a filter is clearly underperforming, producing high differential pressure, allowing media carryover, or causing issues downstream. Sepratech supports both use cases with the same level of rigor.

If you are planning a turnaround, we can build the inspection into your outage window and have recommendations in hand before the next scheduled shutdown. If you are troubleshooting an active problem, we can mobilize quickly, identify the root cause, and give you a clear path forward rather than a list of assumptions.

Koch Methanol Case Study

When an industrial facility’s horizontal pressure media filters began underperforming, Sepratech conducted a comprehensive site audit to identify the root cause. Our team uncovered systemic media loss driven by improper backwash sequencing, along with widespread mechanical deficiencies across all units. Separatech delivered a detailed remediation plan and executed a full media re-bedding on the most critically impacted filter, introducing an enhanced media recipe to improve filtration performance. With one filter successfully restored to design specification, work on the remaining units is ongoing.
