Filter Rebedding

Media Filter Re-Bedding Service

Your filter vessel may still be operating, but is the media inside still performing its function? Anthracite, sand, garnet, and support gravel degrade over time; they compact, fracture, and foul, and as they do, your filter continues to function while quietly decreasing its ability to remove suspended materials. Sepratech provides entire media filter re-bedding services to industrial plants across North America, including massive horizontal pressure filters, handling everything from vacuuming spent media to crane-assisted layer-by-layer reloading with a newly developed media recipe.

Degraded Media Costs More Than A Media Filter Re-Bed

Most facilities wait until something is clearly incorrect before changing filter material. By then, the depleted bed had been working against you for months, increasing differential pressure, reducing backwash intervals, and introducing fine particles into downstream membranes, softeners, and processing equipment. The total cost of that performance loss frequently exceeds what a scheduled re-bed would have cost.

A well-executed media filter re-bed restores your filter to its original design performance, or better, if we change your media recipe simultaneously. Fresh, accurately specified media, loaded in the correct sequence and appropriately leveled, provide a clean baseline and a dependable system. For facilities running horizontal pressure filters, where access and loading logistics are complicated, getting the re-bed correct from the start is even more important.

What We Do During a Re-Bed

Our media filter re-bedding service is based on a comprehensive scope of work, not merely a material swap. Every project includes the mechanical processes required to complete the task correctly, from vessel empty to return to service.

Media Removal Using Vacuum Equipment

We use professional vacuum truck equipment to remove all used filter material from the tank. This removes each layer smoothly and safely, leaving the vessel completely clear before any inside work begins.

Bottom Lateral Removal, Cleaning, & Reinstallation

The internal distribution laterals are unbolted and detached from the vessel. We transfer them to our workshop for pressure washing and deep cleaning, then inspect each one for damage and properly reinstall them before the fresh media load starts.

Vessel Inspection

Before adding new media, we conduct a thorough internal inspection of the empty vessel, including the walls, nozzle floor or lateral assembly, and any internal fittings, to look for corrosion, cracking, or any other condition that could allow media to bypass or exit.

Media Recipe Design, Upgrade, & Supply

We analyze your flow rates, water chemistry, and filtration goals to determine the best media recipe for your vessel, including the appropriate materials, gradations, and layer depths. We acquire and supply commodities in bulk.

Each re-bed closes with a written record of what went into your vessel, including media kinds, gradations, layer depths, and any internal inspection findings. Make no assumptions about what is in your filter going forward. You will know exactly what was loaded, how it was loaded, and what state the internals were in before the media was inserted.

What Else Does Your Filter Need?

Our technicians inspect every component that is accessible, including the air scour, outlet sample, and media trap, while the vessel remains open. We will let you know if something is wrong, explain what we have found and how to fix it.

How It Works

No complicated setup or onboarding is required. Our re-bed project is planned to meet your turnaround schedule, causing minimal disruption to adjacent operations.

Step 1

Pre-Job Inspection: We review the vessel specifications and existing media design before we arrive. We also look at flow rates, any performance issues, and known problems. The media recipe is already formulated, and materials are sourced before we arrive, so that there is no delays once we get on site.

Step 2

Media Removal and Lateral Pull: We use vacuum equipment to remove all media spent from the vessel. The laterals are then unbolted, removed, and transported off-site to our workshop for thorough pressure washing and inspection.

Step 3

Internal Inspection & Reloading: After the vessel has been cleaned and empty, we conduct a full internal inspection. We then reinstall all the cleaned laterals. The media is then stacked, manually leveling each layer and using crane equipment to position bulk bags.

Step 4

Backwash & Return to Service: A Sepratech technician is on site for the first backwash cycle. We monitor the turbidity and duration of the backwash cycle, we skip the air scrub on the first pass in order to protect the new media, we monitor the duration at each phase and confirm the performance before leaving.

Horizontal Filter Re-Bedding

Horizontal pressure filters provide issues that traditional vertical vessel re-beds do not. The side-mounted cylindrical configuration restricts access to the manway, complicates vacuum extraction, and necessitates precise crane positioning during media loading. Working inside a horizontal vessel also requires experience; the geometry makes it easier to disturb lower layers while depositing upper ones, and manual leveling necessitates the knowledge of a technician who understands how the bed should sit before water runs through it.

Sepratech has direct field expertise with horizontal filter re-bedding in heavy industrial settings such as petrochemical, refinery, and methanol production plants. Before mobilizing, our team will arrange the entire sequence, access, vacuum setup, crane positioning, loading order, and leveling approach so that nothing is left to chance on the day. If your facility uses horizontal pressure filters, we have the skills and equipment to effectively manage them.

Scheduled Turnaround or Urgent Response - We Handle Both

Some facilities replace media at regular intervals, before the performance of their filters degrades. Some facilities call us when the differential pressure is high, turbidity is increasing, or a particular filter does not work as it should. Sepratech supports them both.

Our audit and inspection team will assess the current condition of your filter and provide you with a data-based response before you commit to a new bed. We can perform a re-bed if it is necessary.

Koch Methanol Case Study

When an industrial facility’s horizontal pressure media filters began underperforming, Sepratech conducted a comprehensive site audit to identify the root cause. Our team uncovered systemic media loss driven by improper backwash sequencing, along with widespread mechanical deficiencies across all units. Separatech delivered a detailed remediation plan and executed a full media re-bedding on the most critically impacted filter, introducing an enhanced media recipe to improve filtration performance. With one filter successfully restored to design specification, work on the remaining units is ongoing.
