INDSUTRIAL WATER TREATMENT

Media Filter Repair Service

A filter vessel contains more than just a bed. Manways leak, laterals break, underdrains loosen, internal coatings fail, nozzles plug, air scour pipes corrode, and exterior valves and instrumentation deviate from specification. When any of these things fail, the filter continues to function, but it does so inefficiently, and the damage worsens until something completely fails. Sepratech offers a full media filter repair service for industrial plants throughout North America, including mechanical repairs, internal hardware replacement, and controls and instrumentation work on vertical and horizontal pressure filters. Whatever is wrong with the vessel, we have the workers, parts, and field knowledge to restore it to reliable service.

Repair Before Replace

It is costly, disruptive, and often unnecessary to replace a filter vessel. Most filter problems can be traced back to individual parts that are easily repaired or replaced. These include a cracked lateral or nozzle plate, a worn actuator, a blinded or lifted media trap, or a damaged or corroded butterfly valve. Early detection and correction of these issues will keep your asset in service longer, prevent the need for new equipment and its associated capital costs, and lead times.

A targeted repair can also restore performance in ways that a media replacement alone cannot. Even if you load the perfect bed in a filter that has internal damage, media carryover or channeling will still occur on day one. A repair service for Industrial Media Filters will address the mechanical cause first so that the bed above the filter performs exactly as intended when it is returned to service. A structured repair scope can often mean the difference between a decade of reliable operation for older filters that have had their patches applied repeatedly over the years and a replacement project.

What We Do During a Filter Repair

Our repair scopes are defined by what your filter requires, not by a predetermined package. Every work begins with a condition evaluation and concludes with a documented, tested filter that is returned to service.

Internal Hardware Repair & Replacement

We fix or replace broken laterals, nozzles, underdrain assemblies, hub-and-lateral systems, air scour distributors, and internal plumbing. Components are removed, examined, and returned only if they satisfy specifications; otherwise, they are replaced with new hardware.

Vessel Shell and Lining Work

Corrosion, pitting, and lining failure are prevalent problems in older filters, particularly in harsh feed water service. We coordinate surface preparation, spot welding, lining repair, and recoating operations to restore the pressure shell and internal surfaces to a safe condition for both the vessel and the media bed above the floor.

Valves, Actuators, & External Piping

Face pipework, backwash valves, rate-of-flow controllers, actuators, and sampling points all degrade over time and can silently disrupt the entire filter cycle. We fix or replace face piping components so that the filter sequences as intended, rather than the way it has drifted.

Controls & Instrumentation Support

Differential pressure transmitters, turbidity meters, flow meters, and PLC sequencing logic all influence how the filter performs on a daily basis. When repair work is performed on these systems, our team coordinates calibration, loop checks, and sequence verification to ensure that the filter is returned to service under complete, trustworthy control.

Every repair concludes with a written description of what was discovered, what was fixed or replaced, and any recommendations for future work on the remaining units. You complete the project with a clear record of filter conditions, not a verbal handoff.

Catch the Next Problem Before It Starts

A repair job puts our crew inside the vessel and hands-on with the surrounding hardware, which is the best chance you'll get to catch issues that are not yet failures. While we are on site, our technicians keep an eye on adjacent components, connections, and controls for early signs of wear or drift.

How It Works

There are no complicated onboarding procedures. Repairs are arranged around your turnaround schedule and carried out with as little disturbance to the rest of the plant as possible.

Step 1

Conduct a condition assessment by reviewing operating history, performance concerns, and prior inspection/repair data. If the filter has not recently been opened, we can do an on-site check first to ensure that the repair scope is based on actual problems rather than assumptions.

Step 2

We identify the repair scope based on the assessment, including parts, labor, access needs, and projected duration. Components are sourced and staged before to mobilization so that the crew does not have to wait for materials once the vessel is open.

Step 3

Our crew isolates the vessel, opens the manway, and repairs it using proper confined-space and lockout procedures. Internal components are fixed or replaced, shell and lining work is conducted, and external hardware is serviced concurrently if feasible.

Step 4

Before returning the filter to service, we do leak checks on piping, function testing on valves and actuators, instrument calibration, and a controlled initial backwash with the media bed in place. Before demobilizing, a technician remains on-site to ensure that the filter is operating properly.

Repairs Built Around Your Plant

Two filters do not age in the same manner. The load on a carbon filter in a pharmaceutical factory is very different from the load on a horizontal multi media filter before a refinery’s cooling tower. Both filters wear differently compared to a municipal pretreatment system filter that runs at high flux. Repairs that ignore these differences often miss the problem or fix the symptoms without addressing the root cause.

Sepratech designs every scope of repair around the filter we are currently working on. We take into account the service duty, the water chemistry, the flow rates, as well as the age and history of the vessel and the surrounding environment. This context determines which components are prioritized, what materials we use, and which upgrades we recommend while the vessel remains open. This will result in a repair that lasts over time, rather than a quick fix that only fixes the filter for long enough to cause it to fail on the next cycle.

From Small Fixes to Major Mechanical Overhauls

Some calls are straightforward: a leaking valve, a failed actuator, a single cracked lateral discovered during a routine inspection. Others are more involved, full underdrain rebuilds, multi-unit lining repairs, or coordinated mechanical work across an entire filter train during a plant outage. Sepratech is set up for both.

For smaller issues, we can mobilize quickly with a focused crew and resolve the problem in a single visit. For larger, multi-vessel scopes tied to a turnaround, we plan mobilization, sequencing, parts staging, and testing well in advance so the work fits cleanly inside the outage window. In either case, the standard is the same: the filter goes back into service documented, tested, and performing.

Koch Methanol Case Study

When an industrial facility’s horizontal pressure media filters began underperforming, Sepratech conducted a comprehensive site audit to identify the root cause. Our team uncovered systemic media loss driven by improper backwash sequencing, along with widespread mechanical deficiencies across all units. Separatech delivered a detailed remediation plan and executed a full media re-bedding on the most critically impacted filter, introducing an enhanced media recipe to improve filtration performance. With one filter successfully restored to design specification, work on the remaining units is ongoing.
