Industrial Water Treatment Solutions
INDSUTRIAL WATER TREATMENT
Filter media will not last forever. Anthracite rounds off, sand cements together, garnet migrates, and support gravel shifts out of place; once this occurs, no amount of backwashing can restore performance. Sepratech provides complete media replacement service to industrial sites throughout North America, including vertical and horizontal pressure filters of all sizes. Our staff handles everything from cleaning out exhausted material to layer by layer loading a freshly engineered media composition, ensuring that your filter returns to service and performs as intended.
The filter continues to produce water, so the plant uses it well beyond its useful life. This water is often dirtier than the operators think. Compacted, fouled, and fractured media increase differential pressure and shorten backwashing intervals. They also release fines in downstream equipment and slowly erode the performance of RO membranes and softeners. The longer a degraded media bed is in use, the greater the damage and cost.
The filter is reset to a reliable baseline with a media replacement that has been properly performed. Correctly specified and loaded media restores the design filtration performance, protecting everything downstream of filter. It is especially important for horizontal pressure filter installations where access and loading geometry are limited and the loading geometry is not forgiving. A poorly loaded bed can cause the horizontal vessel to underperform on day one, forcing a shutdown much sooner than expected.
Our industrial filter media replacement service is based on a comprehensive scope of work, not merely a material swap. Every project covers the mechanical, inspection, and loading stages required to restore the filter from its depleted state to full, certified service.
We employ professional vacuum truck equipment to remove all exhausted media from the vessel in a clean and controlled manner. Each layer is removed cleanly, leaving the vessel fully empty before any internal activity begins, ensuring that no old material contaminates the fresh bed.
The internal distribution laterals and underdrain hardware have been unbolted and removed. We pressure wash and deep clean, inspect each item for cracks, wear, or blockages, and only reinstall components that are proven to be in good working order.
Before adding any fresh media, we perform a comprehensive inside inspection of the empty vessel. The walls, nozzle floor or lateral assembly, and internal fittings are inspected for corrosion, cracking, pitting, and any other condition that could allow media bypass or premature failure of the new bed.
We examine your flow rates, feed water chemistry, and filtering objectives to validate or improve the media recipe for your vessel, including material choices, gradations, and layer depths. We acquire and deliver all bulk media, ensuring that the project does not suffer from material delays.
Every replacement concludes with a written record of what was loaded into your vessel, including media kinds, gradations, layer depths, and internal inspection findings. You’ll never have to guess what’s inside your filter again.
A replacement is your best chance to address the smaller issues that would otherwise wait until the next shutdown. If something needs attention, we will let you know before the filter is closed back up, so it does not become the reason you are calling us again next year.

No complicated onboarding. Each media replacement is coordinated with your turnaround schedule to ensure minimal disruption to the rest the plant.
Step 1
Pre-Job Review: Before mobilization, we confirm vessel specs, media design, flow rate, and any known performance issues. Before our crew arrives, we finalize the media recipe and source materials to ensure that there are no delays when work starts.
Step 2
Media Removal and Lateral Pull: The vessel is vacuumed to remove the spent media. The laterals are unbolted and removed and then transported to our workshop for pressure cleaning, inspection and any necessary repairs.
Step 3
Internal Inspection and Reloading: After the vessel has been cleaned, it is empty. We perform a complete internal inspection. Reinstalling the cleaned laterals and loading new media layer by layer. Manually leveling and positioning bulk bags using cranes is required.
Step 4
Backwash and Return to Service: Sepratech technicians stay on site during the first backwash cycle. We monitor turbidity, cycle duration and skip the air scrub in the first pass, to protect the fresh media. We confirm performance against the design and verify that the filter is ready for demobilization.
The media that came with your filter when it was first installed may no longer be appropriate for your plant’s current operations. Feed water quality varies, flow demands increase, upstream operations are updated, and downstream equipment evolves, and the media recipe must reflect this. Simply reloading the vessel with the identical specifications that were in place for the previous decade frequently results in poor performance.
Sepratech views each replacement as an opportunity to examine the media design, rather than simply repeating it. We evaluate the present feed water chemistry, turbidity loading, goal effluent quality, flow rates, and backwash capability before recommending the material kinds, gradations, and layer depths that will provide the filtering performance your facility requires. Whether that means keeping with a tried-and-true recipe, upgrading to a higher-performance anthracite, altering gravel support layers, or converting to a multi-media arrangement, the recommendation is tailored to your system, not plucked from a shelf.
As part of their reliability program, some facilities replace the media at regular intervals before filter performance starts to decline. Some facilities call us when the differential pressure increases, effluent is becoming more turbid, or one filter is clearly not performing. Sepratech is able to support both.
Before you replace your filter, our audit and inspection team will evaluate the current condition of the filter and make a recommendation based on data. We will remove the bed if it is necessary. We will also tell you if it doesn’t.
If you’re planning a new project, preparing for an upgrade, or troubleshooting ongoing water treatment challenges, our team is here to help. Contact Sepratech’s professional services team to discuss your specific requirements, review system conditions, and explore the options best suited to your operation. We take the time to understand your goals so we can offer tailored recommendations, engineered solutions, and accurate quotes designed around your facility—not generic templates. Reach out today and let us help you build the most effective, reliable solution for your industrial water treatment needs.
When an industrial facility’s horizontal pressure media filters began underperforming, Sepratech conducted a comprehensive site audit to identify the root cause. Our team uncovered systemic media loss driven by improper backwash sequencing, along with widespread mechanical deficiencies across all units. Separatech delivered a detailed remediation plan and executed a full media re-bedding on the most critically impacted filter, introducing an enhanced media recipe to improve filtration performance. With one filter successfully restored to design specification, work on the remaining units is ongoing.
