Industrial Water Treatment Solutions
INDSUTRIAL WATER TREATMENT
Your filter may be producing water and holding pressure, but what is happening inside the lateral assembly is an entirely different subject. The slow, silent effects of plugged nozzles, fractured laterals, scale build-up, and debris collection inside the underdrain system gradually reduce filtration performance and increase the danger of media bypass long before outside readings reveal the problem. Sepratech offers a comprehensive water filter lateral cleaning and inspection service for industrial facilities across North America. We service vertical and horizontal pressure vessels, providing you with documented, accurate knowledge of the underdrain condition before minor fouling creates a costly operational failure.
Most facilities only pay attention to their water treatment system until something goes wrong. A dirty RO membrane, an overworked softener, a jump in chemical usage or unanticipated corrosion in downstream piping, when these symptoms come to light, the root cause has frequently been brewing for months. Scaling of heat exchanger surfaces, pH control shifts, filter performance deterioration and chemical underfeed or overfeed all silently compound to reduce efficiency and add extra stress on equipment throughout the treatment train.
A proactive industrial water system performance monitoring program eliminates this uncertainty. Rather than waiting to detect warnings or obvious failures, you get a systematic, data-driven evaluation of how well every part in your system is performing against its design objective. This covers flow performance, differential pressure trends, water quality measurements, chemical dosing accuracy and the status of key treatment equipment. The outcome is a defensible record of system health and a clear path for any required corrective action, be that a change to the chemical program, a specific equipment repair, or a planned maintenance intervention.
Proper cleaning and inspection of the water filter laterals provide a clear, documented evaluation of the underdrain situation, so that decisions to repair, clean, or replace are based on what is truly present inside the vessel, not on outside gauges and assumptions.
Our lateral cleaning and inspection service is methodical and consistent. Every engagement follows the same process to ensure that findings are accurate, repeatable, and detailed enough to support confident maintenance decisions.
Before opening the vessel, our team reviews available operational data including flow rates, differential pressure trends, backwash cycles, and any recent changes in filtration performance or downstream water quality. This context allows us to connect what we find inside the vessel to actual system behavior and identify whether lateral condition is contributing to observed performance issues.
Safe entry into the vessel is coordinated with your site team in accordance with confined space and lockout requirements. Where media removal is necessary to access the lateral assembly, our team manages that process carefully to protect bed integrity and ensure proper reinstallation following the inspection and cleaning work.
The internal distribution laterals are unbolted and removed from the vessel. Each lateral is transferred to a designated work area where it undergoes pressure washing and deep cleaning to remove scale, biological deposits, iron fouling, and any debris accumulated inside the bore. This step is essential to the inspection process because fouling on lateral surfaces can conceal cracking, erosion, or damage that would otherwise go undetected.
Once cleaned, each lateral is inspected individually for cracking, erosion, nozzle damage, thread wear, and any deformation that could compromise flow distribution or structural integrity. Findings are documented per lateral so that the report reflects the actual condition of each component rather than a general assessment of the assembly as a whole.
Every performance review concludes with a written report detailing measured parameters, observed conditions, site photographs where relevant, and specific recommendations. You receive a prioritized action list, not a general summary, so your team knows exactly what needs attention and in what order.
When the vessel is open, we do not stop at the laterals. Our team checks vessel walls, inlet and outlet pipework, nozzle floors, air scour distributors, and internal fittings for corrosion, pitting, and wear that could affect filter performance. If something looks off, you will hear about it, with a clear explanation of what it means and what to do next.

No complex onboarding. Lateral cleaning and inspection activities are scheduled to fit your turnaround window or maintenance cycle to minimize disruption to nearby operations.
Step 1
Pre-Service Data Collection: We collect the vessel drawings, original lateral specifications, recent operational data and any maintenance history on the filter in question. When our technicians arrive on site, they already know how the system was supposed to operate and where current performance data suggests it may be falling short.
Step 2
Safe Isolation and Site Mobilization: Our staff will liaise with your site with regard to requirements for lockout, confined space entry and isolation. We come fully equipped with the tools, PPE, cleaning gear and documentation materials needed to safely access the vessel and initiate the lateral removal operation.
Step 3
Lateral Removal, Cleaning and Inspection The laterals are removed, pressure-washed and inspected separately. Findings are documented in real time with images that detail the condition of each component. No assembly takes place until the whole inspection has been carried out and all findings recorded
Step 4
Reporting, Reinstalling, and Recommendations: Cleaned and approved laterals are correctly reinstalled after inspection. Our written report includes observations, images and prioritized recommendations for each component. If a repair or replacement is required, our team may provide a scope and quotation as part of the same engagement.
Horizontal pressure filters present unique access challenges that do not apply to standard vertical vessels. The side-mounted cylindrical configuration limits manway access, complicates lateral removal along the full length of the vessel, and creates conditions where fouling and damage accumulate differently across the bed. Assessing lateral condition uniformly across a horizontal vessel requires a more disciplined approach than a standard vertical filter inspection.
Sepratech has extensive field experience conducting water filter lateral cleaning and inspection work in horizontal pressure vessels across petrochemical, refinery, power generation, and methanol facilities throughout North America. Our technicians understand the access constraints, know where lateral wear and fouling problems tend to concentrate in horizontal configurations, and document findings in a format that supports clear repair planning regardless of vessel geometry.
Some facilities include lateral cleaning and inspection as a fixed interval item within their preventive maintenance program, ensuring that the underdrain condition is assessed and documented on a regular basis rather than only when performance problems emerge. Others contact Sepratech when a filter is already showing signs of trouble, elevated differential pressure, poor backwash response, media carryover, or inconsistent downstream water quality, and need a clear diagnosis rather than a list of possibilities.
Sepratech supports both approaches with the same standard of work and documentation. If you are planning ahead, we can schedule the engagement within your outage or turnaround window and have findings and recommendations in hand before your next shutdown. If you are troubleshooting an active problem, we can mobilize quickly, assess the lateral assembly, and give your team a clear path forward based on what we actually find inside the vessel.
If your facility has not had a structured water filter lateral cleaning and inspection in recent years, it is worth knowing what condition your underdrain is actually in before it tells you itself.
If you’re planning a new project, preparing for an upgrade, or troubleshooting ongoing water treatment challenges, our team is here to help. When an industrial facility’s horizontal pressure media filters began underperforming, Sepratech conducted a comprehensive site audit to identify the root cause. Our team uncovered systemic media loss driven by improper backwash sequencing, along with widespread mechanical deficiencies across all units. Separatech delivered a detailed remediation plan and executed a full media re-bedding on the most critically impacted filter, introducing an enhanced media recipe to improve filtration performance. With one filter successfully restored to design specification, work on the remaining units is ongoing.
